A Workshop on Indigenizing Education

Authors

  • Jalissa Schmidt

Abstract

This is workshop is to support educators in developing ways to meaningfully engage with Indigenous knowledge systems and worldviews in our places of learning. Indigenizing requires heart work, connecting with and embodying the values of Indigenous Peoples is foundational to making meaningful change. Together, we will engage in dialogue, story, and relational activities to deepen our understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and being. We will work together on foundational questions such as how to respectfully engage with Indigenous knowledge in education, how to approach this work from a lens of interconnectedness and relationality, and how to move the indigenizing education forward – both inside and outside of the classroom. The intention of this workshop is for us to navigate this process of indigenizing together as a learning community and to offer support to each other along the way. In this workshop we are holding space for intentionally engaging with Indigenous knowledges and for considering how we can respectfully engage with Indigenous Peoples and worldviews in our diverse places of learning.
