Abstract

This presentation explores how courage, vulnerability, and mindfulness serve as essential elements in postsecondary leadership and teaching, particularly during times of significant change. Drawing from contemporary leadership theories and mindfulness practices, the presentation offers strategies for navigating institutional challenges, fostering resilient educational communities, and cultivating authentic presence in both leadership and teaching roles. Practical techniques for implementing these approaches in everyday academic settings will be shared.

Author Biography

Melanie Ruffie, Alexander College

Mélanie Ruffié is a multidisciplinary educator and wellness practitioner with over a decade of experience in teaching. She specializes in trauma-sensitive care, holistic wellness, and innovative teaching methods. She holds an MA in French and Francophone Literature with a focus on truth and memory in history, resilience, and social justice. She is also a French Instructor at KPU and Alexander College, a Yoga Therapist and a baker. Mélanie has organized, facilitated, and presented in multiple workshops focusing on mindful baking, resilience, health and wellness, and mindfulness. Her approach bridges academic with ancestral knowledge and practical tools, advocating for well-being in educational settings. She is trained in Brené Brown's Dare to Lead™ certificate program and has worked in the Downtown Eastside community and Francophone Women's Association for many years. Mélanie is passionate about empowering individuals through education, mindfulness, and community engagement.
